I Left the NexDrive in My Silverado for 90 Days. Here's What Actually Happened.

This is the one that's been in my Silverado for three months.

Why I bought one

Two years of shudder at highway speeds. Felt like driving onto rumble strips that never ended.

I paid a shop $200 to tell me my transmission looked fine. The next day it was still doing it.

Then I found the forums, and every thread landed on the same line.

Disable AFM before it kills your lifters.

Long story short: your truck shuts down four cylinders while you cruise, then turns them back on, hundreds of times a drive. The lifters doing that work are hydraulic. They lock and unlock on oil pressure every cycle. Eventually one sticks, collapses, and takes the camshaft with it.

Collapsed AFM lifter and scored camshaft from a GM V8

That's a full teardown. Five to eight grand, and your truck sits at a shop for a week or two while you figure out how you're getting to work.

The shudder wasn't what scared me. The bill sitting behind it was.

DAY 1

Ten seconds under the dash

Hand plugging the NexDrive into the OBD2 port under a truck dashboard

The port sits under the dash on the driver's side, right above your left knee. No tools, no panel to pull.

Plugged it in, blue lights came on. That was the install.

Then I got on the interstate and took it to 68. Nothing. Dead smooth, gone before my first exit.

V8 stayed lit the whole way. Didn't flip over on the flat, didn't drop on the hill coming home.

Before you read the rest, none of this matters if it doesn't fit your truck. Check yours here.

WEEK 2

The code that never showed up

Silverado parked in a driveway

Two weeks of daily driving, including a two hour run with a trailer behind me. I watched that dash like a hawk.

No check engine light. No ABS. No traction light. No hunting between gears.

Makes sense once you know what it's actually doing. It isn't flashing a tune or rewriting your ECU. Nothing gets stored, nothing gets overwritten. Pull it out and your truck is exactly how it left the factory, with nothing behind for a dealer to find.

WEEK 3

I left it in over the weekend on purpose

Dipstick showing clean amber oil at a good level

Anything living in your OBD2 port pulls a little power. That's just true, and anyone telling you different is selling you something.

Parked it Friday night and didn't touch it. Got in cold Monday morning and it fired like normal. No slow crank, no jump box.

So here's the straight answer nobody gave me:

Daily driving or sitting a weekend, you'll never notice it. If your truck is going to sit longer than a few days, pull the unit. Takes two seconds and it goes back in when you're home.

That's the whole downside. Better you hear it from me than find out yourself and get annoyed about it.

DAY 90

The oil change, and the second one I bought

A second NexDrive unit held up in front of a Tahoe in a driveway

Oil came back clean. Nothing on the plug.

I won't tell you this repairs anything that's already broken, because it doesn't. If your lifters are going, this isn't what saves them. What it does is stop the cycling that wears them out, so the damage never starts in the first place.

Truck drives better too. Throttle's crisper, it holds a gear on hills instead of hunting, and it sounds like a V8 all the time now instead of half the time.

Last month I bought a second one. My dad's Tahoe has the same 5.3 and he'd been describing my exact shudder for a year, convinced it was his transmission. Plugged it in for him in his driveway. Same result.

"Plugged it into my 2015 Silverado 5.3 and the shudder I'd had for two years was gone immediately. Should've done this before I spent $200 on a mechanic telling me my lifters were starting to go."

"Was a total skeptic. My buddy plugged his in and told me to try it. Shudder gone, V8 locked, feels like a different truck. He ordered one for his Tahoe the same night."

COMMON QUESTIONS

What People Ask Before They Buy

Q Will this void my warranty?

It's fully reversible. Unplug it and your truck returns to factory settings instantly with no trace. Unplug before any dealer visit and there's nothing to find. NexDrive positions this as operating without factory warranty concerns.

Q My truck feels fine right now. Do I really need this?

That's exactly who this is for. Once you hear the tick, the damage has already started. This is cheap insurance against a repair that arrives without warning. Every owner who found out the hard way says the same thing: "I wish I'd done this sooner."

Q Will my fuel economy suffer?

You'll see a small drop, roughly 1 to 3 MPG. Every owner I've talked to gives the same answer unprompted: "I'd rather buy more gas than replace an engine." That's the math. You decide what it's worth.

Q Is this a permanent modification?

Not at all. It doesn't reprogram your ECU or write anything to your computer. Pull it out and your truck is completely factory in seconds. Nothing is permanent.

Q What if it doesn't work for me?

NexDrive backs it with a satisfaction guarantee. I've put these on hundreds of trucks over three years. Not one has ever come back to me.
