What Is Active Fuel Management (AFM)?
Active Fuel Management is General Motors' cylinder deactivation system. When your truck is cruising under light load, the engine computer shuts off fuel and valve movement to half of the cylinders, turning a V8 into a V4 (or a V6 into a V3 on some engines). When you press the gas or start climbing, it switches back to all cylinders. The goal is a small gain in highway fuel economy.
GM first called the system Displacement on Demand (DoD), which is why you will still see owners searching for a "DoD delete" or "DoD disabler." It was renamed Active Fuel Management and spread across most GM V8 trucks and SUVs, plus several V6 cars and crossovers.
How AFM works inside your engine
On a GM V8 with AFM, cylinders 1 and 7 on the driver's side bank and 4 and 6 on the passenger's side bank use special two stage lifters. A set of solenoids in the lifter oil manifold (often called the VLOM or LOMA) sends pressurized oil to those lifters. The oil unlocks a pin inside each lifter so it collapses on itself. The valves stay closed, and those four cylinders stop firing.
AFM V4 mode on a GM V8. The same four cylinders shut off every time.
How often does AFM switch?
Constantly. On a typical highway drive, the system can move between V8 and V4 mode hundreds of times. Every switch asks those eight AFM lifters to collapse and lock again. That repeated cycling is the heart of the AFM lifter problem that so many Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe and Yukon owners run into.
AFM vs DFM: What Changed With Dynamic Fuel Management
Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) replaced AFM on many 2019 and newer GM trucks and SUVs, including the redesigned Silverado and Sierra with the 5.3L and 6.2L V8. Instead of always shutting off the same four cylinders, DFM can run the engine on anywhere from two to eight cylinders and changes the pattern constantly.
To do that, DFM engines use deactivating lifters on every cylinder, not just four. So when owners search for a DFM disabler or DFM delete, they are dealing with the same basic concern as AFM, spread across more lifters.

Why AFM Lifters Fail on GM Engines
AFM lifter failure is one of the most discussed problems on GM truck forums, and it shows up on the 5.3L, 6.0L and 6.2L alike. A standard lifter is a simple part. An AFM lifter has an internal locking pin, a spring and oil passages that have to work perfectly every time the system switches modes. That extra complexity creates more ways to fail.
The main causes owners and mechanics point to
- Constant cycling. Hundreds of V8 to V4 switches per drive means hundreds of collapse and lock cycles for every AFM lifter.
- Oil quality and pressure. The system depends on clean oil at the right pressure. Stretched oil change intervals, low oil level or sludge can make lifters stick.
- A stuck or collapsed lifter. When the locking pin fails, the lifter can stay collapsed, which leaves that cylinder with no valve movement and causes a misfire.
- Roller wear. If the small roller at the bottom of the lifter stops spinning, it can grind the camshaft lobe, turning a lifter job into a lifter and cam job.
What an AFM lifter repair costs
Replacing failed AFM lifters usually means pulling the heads, and often the camshaft if a lobe is damaged. Owners commonly report shop quotes of $5,000 to $8,000 for a full lifter and cam job on a GM V8. Many owners also point out that replacing lifters with new AFM lifters does not remove the cause, since the system keeps cycling afterward.
Already hearing a tick or getting misfire codes? An AFM disabler keeps the system from cycling. It cannot repair a lifter or camshaft that is already damaged. Have a mechanic diagnose active symptoms first.
AFM Lifter Failure Symptoms to Watch For
These are the signs GM owners most often describe before or during an AFM lifter failure. One symptom on its own does not confirm a bad lifter, but a combination is worth taking seriously.
Lifter tick or tapping
A ticking noise from the top of the engine that gets louder at idle or when the engine warms up. The classic "5.3 lifter tick."
Misfire codes
A check engine light with P0300 (random misfire) or cylinder specific codes like P0301, P0304, P0306 or P0307, which match the AFM cylinders.
Shudder and drone
A shake or low drone when the truck drops into V4 mode at cruise, often felt through the seat and steering wheel.
Rough idle or hesitation
An uneven idle, stumbling on acceleration, or surging as the engine moves in and out of cylinder deactivation.
Oil consumption
Some AFM engines are known for using oil between changes, a concern many owners link to the AFM system.
AFM system codes
Codes such as P3400 (cylinder deactivation system performance) or lifter oil manifold solenoid codes point directly at the AFM hardware.
What an AFM Disabler Is and How It Works
An AFM disabler (also sold as an AFM/DFM disabler or cylinder deactivation disabler) is a small module that plugs into your truck's OBD2 port under the dash. It communicates with the vehicle through the standard diagnostic connection and keeps the engine from entering cylinder deactivation, so it stays in full V8 mode (or full V6 mode) while it is plugged in.
Because a plug in AFM disabler does not reflash or rewrite the factory ECU programming, it is reversible. Unplug it and the truck goes back to its factory behavior. That is the main reason owners choose a disabler over an ECU tune or an AFM delete kit.
What a plug in AFM disabler does not do
- It does not remove AFM hardware. The AFM lifters stay in the engine; they simply stop cycling.
- It does not fix a lifter, pushrod or cam that has already failed.
- It is not a tuner. It does not change fuel, timing or shift tables.

How to Disable AFM: Disabler vs Tune vs AFM Delete Kit
There are three main ways to turn off AFM or DFM on a GM engine. Each one solves the cycling problem differently, and the right choice depends on your budget, your warranty situation and whether the engine already needs work.
1. Plug in AFM/DFM disabler
An OBD2 module such as the NexDrive or the Range AFM/DFM Disabler. It is the lowest cost and fastest option, and it leaves the factory programming alone. It needs to stay plugged in to keep AFM off.
2. ECU tune to turn AFM off
A tuner or tuning software, such as HP Tuners in the hands of a tuning shop, can switch cylinder deactivation off in the engine calibration. It is permanent until someone reflashes the ECU, and a modified calibration can be seen by a dealer.
3. Mechanical AFM delete kit
A full AFM delete or DFM delete replaces the AFM lifters with standard lifters, blocks off the lifter oil manifold, often adds a new camshaft, and requires a tune. Kits from companies like Brian Tooley Racing and Texas Speed are popular for engines that already need lifters or are being built for performance. It is the most thorough fix and by far the most expensive.
| Plug in disabler | ECU tune | AFM delete kit | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical cost | From $89.95 (NexDrive) | Tuner or shop fee | $1,500 to $3,000+ installed |
| Install time | About 10 seconds | About an hour at a shop | One or more days in the shop |
| Engine teardown | No | No | Yes |
| Changes ECU programming | No | Yes | Yes, tune required |
| Reversible | Unplug any time | Requires a reflash | No |
| Removes AFM lifters | No | No | Yes |
| Best for | Healthy engines, prevention | Owners already tuning | Engines needing lifters or a build |

Year, model and engine all matter. Before you buy any AFM or DFM disabler, confirm your exact vehicle against the seller's fitment list. You can check yours on the NexDrive compatibility list, or message us with your year, model and engine and we will confirm it.
How to Install an AFM Disabler in 10 Seconds
Installing a plug in AFM/DFM disabler takes no tools and no wiring. Here is the process on a typical Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe or Yukon.
- Find the OBD2 portIt is a 16 pin connector under the dash on the driver's side, usually just above the pedals.
- Plug in the disablerLine the module up with the port and push it in until it seats.
- Start the engineTurn the key or press start. On the NexDrive, the blue LEDs light up to confirm it is active.
- Confirm V8 modeOn many GM trucks the driver information center shows a V4 or V8 indicator in the fuel economy screen. With the disabler working, it should stay in V8 at cruise.
To go back to factory operation, unplug the module. If the truck will sit for more than a week, unplug it until you drive again, the same as any OBD2 accessory.
Warranty, Fuel Economy, Battery and Emissions
Does an AFM disabler void your warranty?
A plug in disabler does not change the factory programming, and it can be removed in seconds. Under federal warranty law, a dealer generally cannot void your whole warranty simply because an aftermarket part is installed, though they can deny a specific claim they show was caused by it. We still recommend unplugging before any dealer service visit. This is general information, not legal advice.
Will disabling AFM change your MPG?
Cylinder deactivation exists to save fuel at light load, and many owners estimate the benefit at around 1 to 2 mpg on the highway. Running in full V8 mode full time can cost a small amount of highway fuel economy depending on how you drive. Most owners who disable AFM see that as a fair trade for smoother operation and less lifter cycling. NexDrive is not represented to improve fuel economy.
AFM disabler battery drain
A well built disabler draws very little power. A truck can sit for a few days with it installed and start normally. For longer storage, unplug it.
Emissions, codes and inspections
A plug in disabler works through the vehicle's normal diagnostic communication and is not designed to trigger a check engine light. Emissions and inspection rules vary by state, so check your local requirements before you install any aftermarket device.
How to Choose the Best AFM Disabler
Search for "best AFM disabler" and you will find dozens of similar looking OBD2 modules. Here is what separates a good one from a cheap clone.
A real fitment list
Look for a model, engine and year list, not just "fits all GM." DFM and AFM trucks behave differently.
A status light
An LED that confirms the module is active saves you guessing whether it is working.
No ECU changes
A true plug in disabler should leave the factory programming untouched and unplug cleanly.
Low power draw
Check the seller's guidance on how long the truck can sit with it plugged in.
A real guarantee
A clear return window and a guarantee in writing, not a vague promise.
Reachable support
An email or contact page that actually answers fitment questions before you buy.
Cylinder Deactivation on Other Brands
GM is not the only automaker using cylinder deactivation. Owners researching AFM often come across these related systems:
- MDS (Multi Displacement System) on Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram HEMI V8 engines.
- VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) on Honda and Acura V6 engines.
- Cylinder deactivation on select Ford, Mazda and Volkswagen group engines.
These systems work differently and use different hardware and communication. The NexDrive is built specifically for GM engines with AFM or DFM and is not designed for MDS, VCM or other brands' systems.

AFM Disabler FAQ
What does an AFM disabler do?
An AFM disabler plugs into your OBD2 port and keeps a GM engine from entering cylinder deactivation, so it runs on all cylinders instead of switching between V8 and V4 mode.
Is an AFM disabler worth it?
For many owners of healthy AFM or DFM engines, a plug in disabler is an inexpensive way to stop the constant cylinder cycling that wears AFM lifters. It is not a repair for an engine that already has a failed lifter.
Does an AFM disabler work on DFM trucks?
Many disablers, including the NexDrive, are designed for both AFM and DFM on supported GM models. Always confirm your exact year, model and engine on the fitment list.
Can I disable AFM without a tuner?
Yes. A plug in AFM disabler turns off cylinder deactivation without reprogramming the ECU. Tuning is only needed if you want AFM switched off in the calibration itself or you install an AFM delete kit.
Will an AFM disabler fix my lifter tick?
No. If a lifter is already collapsed or damaged, the engine needs to be diagnosed and repaired. A disabler helps by keeping the system from cycling, which is why owners install one before symptoms start.
Does an AFM disabler cause a check engine light?
A plug in disabler works through the vehicle's normal diagnostic communication and is not designed to trigger engine lights.
Do I have to leave the AFM disabler plugged in?
Yes. It only keeps AFM off while it is connected. Unplug it and the truck returns to factory operation.
Will an AFM disabler drain my battery?
A quality disabler draws very little power. Your truck can sit a few days with it installed. If it will sit longer than a week, unplug it.
How much does an AFM delete cost compared to a disabler?
A mechanical AFM delete kit with installation commonly runs $1,500 to $3,000 or more. A plug in disabler like the NexDrive costs $89.95 and installs in about 10 seconds.
Does disabling AFM lower gas mileage?
It can reduce highway fuel economy slightly, often estimated around 1 to 2 mpg, depending on how you drive.
How do I know if my truck has AFM or DFM?
Check the RPO engine code on the glove box sticker and compare it to the engine table above. Many trucks also show a V4 or V8 indicator in the driver information center.
Is the NexDrive made by GM?
No. NexDrive is an independent aftermarket brand and is not affiliated with or endorsed by General Motors.
